A sentimental walk down memory lane was had by all during the Cool Waters Cowboy Music concert this past Saturday night. Lots of folks were there and enjoyed the music of our youth together.

Richard Oldfield had his incredible collection of cowboy memorabilia on display for all to enjoy too. I want to say a special Thank You to Richard for being a big reason that this event was possible. I know he joins me in saying thank you also to the many sponsors that contributed to this event’s success. If it were not for the generosity of our sponsors we would not be able to bring in the variety of entertainment and educational opportunities that are provided at the Arts Center. Sponsors are vital to our success!

Ornaments Created for National KY Christmas Tree in Washington, DC

Speaking of opportunities, we have a rare one for our youth in grades 5^th – 12^th. The Kentucky Arts Council has awarded us the opportunity for our youth to create the Christmas ornaments that will be adorning the National Kentucky Christmas Tree in Washington, DC. This tree is a part of the Lighting of the National Christmas Tree Ceremony that will take place on December 1^st at 5:00pm. In fact, one of these ornaments will be chosen to be placed on the National Christmas Tree.

Artist Amanda Brantly will be working with these youth and we only have 24 ornaments with a short amount of time to create them. Amanda will be holding 4 workshops: November 5: 10-noon & 1-3:00pm and November 12: 10-noon & 1-3:00pm for students to work on the ornaments. Morehead State University Art Student Exhibit

Also coming up this week we have a couple of other wonderful events. This Friday we will be hosting the Opening Reception for the annual Morehead State University Art Student Exhibit. This is always a fascinating exhibit showing what our emerging artists are creating and discussing.

A Gallery Talk will be held at 5:30pm and following at 6:30pm the Morehead University BFA Creative Writing Students will be reading from their works as well. So join from 4:30-7:00pm for a free evening of art and creative writings by some very talented artists. We wish to thank Morehead State University for generously sponsoring this exhibit again this year.

Louisville Mandolin Orchestra

Sunday afternoon, November 6 at 4:00pm, we have another rare opportunity for our community. The Arts Center is presenting the Louisville Mandolin Orchestra - 20 musicians with a variety of Mandolins playing a variety of music from classical to contemporary.

This is an event that you do not want to miss! Having 20 Mandolins together in one space will be a beautiful event for the listener. As you may know the Mandolin is a favorite instrument for Bluegrass Musicians too.

Tickets are $12.50 for adults, and $5 for students of all ages and available at the Arts Center and Ruth Hunt Candy. Please take time to experience this amazing musical event and invite a friend to come too.

“A Wedding to Die For” by Donna Ison

Donna Ison, originally of Mt. Sterling, has been busy writing many plays for theatre groups to perform throughout the region. We are privileged to present one of her recent murder mysteries right here in her own hometown.

On Saturday, November 12^th at 7:00pm, we will be presenting “A Wedding To Die For” in the Lewis Apperson White Performance Hall at the Arts Center. An intriguing “who done it” murder mystery that the audience is in the middle of.

Come join the fun and celebrate with Donna Ison as we present one of her plays for the first time. Tickets are $30/person and include dinner and set ups (soft drinks, water, etc.) You may bring your favorite beverage if you like. Tables of 8 may be reserved. After School Art Camp

November 14-18th an “After School Art Camp” will be held at the Arts Center. This is for children grades 2^nd-5^th from 2:45-4:15pm daily. Drawing, painting, collage, stenciling, etc. are what these children will be learning under the expertise of artist Cathy McGinnis. This is a great way to spend chilly afternoons in the warmth of a classroom experience.

“Bits & Pieces” Community Built Mosaic

But there is more taking place at the Arts Center! The “Bits & Pieces” Community Built Mosaic is about to begin. Designed by nationally renowned Mosaic Artist Sherrie Warner Hunter we will be working with children and adults of all ages to create this mosaic that depicts the images of our Gateway Area.

If you are interested in learning how to do mosaics and would like to lead a team on Saturdays to create this beautiful work of art we need you. Sherrie will be teaching how to do Mosaics the evenings of November 17 & 18. Please call: 859-498-6264 to sign up as a team leader (you do not have to have prior experience).

If you are interested as an individual or group to participate in the building of the mosaic we will be doing the first placing of tiles on Saturday & Sunday – November 19 & 20. The “Bits & Pieces” Gateway Mosaic will be installed on the side ramp of the Arts Center this spring and will measure 25ft x 5ft. This is a tremendous project that will be seen by many generations to come and we thank Mosaic Artist Terri Pulley for her coordination and direction on this project. This project is free to all participants.

Open Mic Night

Our Young Adult Team will be presenting “Open Mic Night” on Thursday, November 17^th in the Small Performance Café (we are still looking for a donor to name this space after!) at the Arts Center. These nights have been delightful evenings of listening to emerging artists by supportive audiences.

If you would like to try your hand at performing it is free to participate. Just come to the center at 6:30pm, sign up, and share your talent (music, creative writings, etc.). As an audience, the performances start at 7:00 and it is free to you also. What a great way to spend a cold evening in a cozy space with talented performers. Hope to see you there.

What's Happening at the Gateway Regional Arts Center!

We have had a busy few weeks down at the Gateway Regional Arts Center! Great Motown music, wonderful Missoula Children’s Theatre, fun Open Mic Night, beautiful art by Arturo Sandoval, are just to name a few. But there is more to come so hang on to your cowboy hats and lets talk about what is coming to the Arts Center.

Arturo Sandoval’s contemporary weavings continue to be on display at the Arts Center Gallery. If you have not had a chance to see his work do come down and take a look. Arturo is a nationally and internationally renowned artist that has work all over the country. We are fortunate to have his art in our gallery to share with our community. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday: 10-5:00pm daily and on Saturdays: 11:30-4:30pm.

Taking place at the Arts Center now are workshops and classes for youth and adults. We have the following learning opportunities for youth: Papermaking on October 8^th for grades 3rd-5^th: noon – 3:00pm ($30); an After School Art Camp November 14^th – 18^th: 2:45-4:15 ($50). Both of these classes are taught by Cathy McGinnis.

For young adults and adults we have the following: Beaded Jewelry – Saturday October 22^nd: noon – 4:00pm for ages 14 and up by Pam Henderson ($8 earrings, $10 bracelet, $12 necklace, $28 for a set); Yoga – 6 weeks on Fridays: 9:00-10:15am taught by Rene Hauk. Not too late to join ($60); and the Art of Couponing on Saturday, November 5^th: noon – 2:00pm ($14.50) taught by Jessica Adkins. Sunday, October 9 at 7:00pm, we have a special opportunity to meet legislators and ask questions during a panel discussion at the Arts Center. The topic will concern the future of Not-for-Profits in Kentucky, including a discussion about their future funding.

Many of us work for Not-for-Profit Organizations, volunteer on their boards and as members. We have over 100 area Not-for-Profit Organizations that make a daily impact on the quality of life in our communities. This impact includes health, education, the arts, social issues, recreation, at risk youth, and so much more. If you are involved with an organization, or have an interest in Not-for-Profits, then I encourage you to join us for this free panel discussion Sunday. It will be held in the Lewis Apperson White Performance Hall at the Gateway Regional Arts Center.

Also taking place at the Arts Center on October 15^th is the second annual “Super Awesome Fun Time” event for young adults. This event is sponsored by our Young Adult team who bring to you monthly the Open Mic Nights in the Arts Center Café.

The Court Day event will take place 8:00-10:00pm and will feature the music of two artists, Kenton Montgomery and Travis Hall. Also performing are two bands, The Deloreans and Anna Kline and the Grits & Soul Band. Great music and fun for all and tickets are only $5. This Young Adult team is also presenting Open Mic that takes place following Court Day on October 20^th. This is a great opportunity to “get your feet wet” as an entertainer in front of a very supportive audience in a small performance setting. We have had wonderful singers, guitarists, creative writers, and many more take part in this evening of performances.

If you would like to perform please come between 6:30 and 7:00pm to sign up for a time slot. If you would like to be a part of the supportive audience come anytime after 6:30 to have a seat around our new café tables. Refreshments are available for purchase and support the work of the Young Adult team. This is a great way to spend a couple of hours enjoying the talents of others at the Arts Center and it is free to everyone.

Now I mentioned hanging on to your cowboy hats, well that is because “Cool Waters” is coming to town! “Cool Waters” is a group of performers that sing the traditional cowboy music that many of us grew up with. They are witty and a delight to listen to.

“Cool Waters” will be performing on October 29^th in the Lewis Apperson White Performance Hall at the Arts Center beginning at 7:00pm. We will be having a Best Dressed children’s and adult Cowgirl and Cowboy contest that night too. So be sure to bring your little ones and yourself in your favorite cowboy outfit that evening.

Tickets are: $12.50 for adults; $20 for a family of 4; and for additional family members it is $5. This will be a family friendly fun event that you do not want to miss so please put the date on your calendar today and make plans to join us.

Noteables Youth Chorus to begin

The Noteables Community Youth Chorus will begin rehearsals Sept. 13 starting at 6:30pm.

The chorus is open to students in grades 4th - 10th in the Gateway Area. There are no auditions, just a love of singing!

Fees are $15/month and need based scholarships are available.

The Noteables will again be under the direction of Debbie Kidd and accompanied by Ann Whisman. This year Melanie Sanders will also be directing the chorus.

Kevin McLaughlin Concert

MONTGOMERY COUNTY COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS ARTICLE – SEPTEMER, 2012

What a wonderful evening we have planned for this Friday night, September 2^nd! The festivities begin with an Opening Reception celebrating the work of nationally renowned Fiber Artist Arturo Sandoval.

Arturo is known for his beautiful weavings and fiber art utilizing a traditional art form incorporating untraditional materials. His works can be rather large and are found around the country in all types of venues.

The Opening Reception is free and begins at 4:30 Friday and lasts till 7:00pm. A short informal Gallery Talk will take place at 5:30pm and is a great opportunity to ask questions of our artist about his work.

We wish to thank our sponsors: Lena Hedberg of Hedberg Hall and Scout Antiques of Lexington for making this exhibit possible. Arturo’s work will be on display throughout the months of September and October.

But, there is more to the evening. Kevin McLaughlin, originally of Mt. Sterling, will be performing in concert in the Lewis Apperson White Performance Hall. Kevin is the son of Carol McLaughlin and Dr. Paul McLaughlin. His grandparents are Dr. and Mrs. Lon Roberts and Mrs. Iris McLaughlin and the late Mr. Eugene McLaughlin. Kevin attended Montgomery County Schools, Interlochen Arts Academy, and is now a 4^th year student at the Manhattan School of Music in New York.

His concert will begin at 7:00pm and will feature Classical Music and Spirituals. The evening will also include a guest performance by Kyle Scripnick and Chia-Ling Hsieh will be the accompanist.

Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the Gateway Regional Arts Center and Ruth Hunt Candy. Kevin is generously donating all proceeds in support of the Arts Center projects and programs for 2011-12.

So, not only does your purchase of a ticket support the Arts Center but, you will have an opportunity to hear an absolutely wonderful performance. Be sure to purchase your ticket today.

Another opportunity to hear a different type of performance comes on Saturday, September 10^th in the Arts Center. Well known comedian, Lee Cruse, will be taking the stage at 8:00pm in the Lewis Apperson White Performance Hall.

Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door and available at Ruth Hunt Candy and the Gateway Regional Arts Center. Feel free to bring your favorite beverage and join us for an evening of laughter and fun.

Talk about fun, be sure to join us for Open Mic on Thursday, September 15. This will be our 4th Open Mic presented by our Young Adult Team. The evening begins with registration 6:30-7:00 for performers, with performances starting at 7:00pm.

This is a great way to “get your feet wet” if you have always wanted to perform in front of an audience. Our audiences have been very supportive to our performers so the experience is a good one for first timers.

All of this is free for the performers and the audience. So come join the fun and help support our emerging artists (vocalists, creative writers, musicians, actors, etc.). There is no age limit either. See you at Open Mic on the 15^th.

Sunday, September 18^th we will be celebrating the 2^nd Birthday of the Gateway Regional Arts Center from 1-4:00pm. This will be a drop in type of event where you can hear a variety of music, children can take part in an arts activity, enjoy some birthday cake and so much more. Be watching for more information and make plans to stop by and help us celebrate the success of our community arts center!

“When will Missoula be here?” This is the question we hear as soon as school starts for elementary students. Well, the answer is “September 26-Oct 1”! This year the Missoula Children’s Theatre will be presenting “The Turtle vs. the Hare” and will be holding auditions for students in K-5^th grades.

Auditions are at 3:00pm, Monday - September 26, and held at McNabb Middle School this year. Rehearsals and performances will also be at McNabb.

We wish to say a special Thank You to our sponsor the Montgomery County Board of Education. We would not be able to have this program without their support for we make it available free to our students. Many of our local communities charge as much as $75 per student to participate. What's Happening in the Gateway Regional Arts Center in August!!

Lots of action and fun happening at the Gateway Regional Arts Center these past few weeks! Summer Playhouse and Summer Stock were a huge success and we congratulate all of the children, our youth assistants, and our director Jansje Huyck for a job well done.

We have also presented the Young At Heart Big Band and most recently “Le Cabaret!”, both of which were great fun. Open Mic was another hit and a success in our Small Performance Café. Along with the exhibit of the Bluegrass Drawing Society’s beautifully executed detailed drawings in the Arts Center Gallery.

Now we are moving into August and there is plenty more on hand happening in the Arts Center. A quick look includes:

This Friday’s Opening Reception is a great place to meet others who have a passion for the visual arts. This month our featured artist is Carolyn Hisel of the Lexington area whose paintings consist of beautiful and colorful imagery.

Carolyn’s work is highly sought after and in many collections around the country. Be sure to join us for the short Gallery Talk that begins at 5:30pm for this is an opportunity to talk informally with the artist and ask questions you may have about her work. This event is free and made possible by our sponsors Dr. & Mrs. Robert Toon to whom we wish to say a very special Thank You.

Saturday, August 7^that 6:00pm, the youth who have been working all summer under the direction of Natalie Lawson will be performing “God of our City” in the Lewis Apperson White Performance Hall. This musical performance is about children working together to make their community a better place to live for everyone. Please join us in support of these children for this free performance and a reception following sponsored by Gateway Christian Church.

Open Mic Nights have been fun filled evenings and a great success. The Arts Center Young Adult Team have been responsible for presenting these evenings of local and regional talent and are going a great job. Thursday, August 18^th will be the 3^rd Open Mic to be presented and will prove to again provide a wide variety of entertainment that includes all ages.

If you are a performer (musician, vocal, creative writing) and would like to perform that evening please come at 6:30 to sign up. We have a limited number of artists who can perform in an evening. So be sure to put the 3^rd Thursday of each month on your calendar and join us for Open Mic Nights that are free and open to everyone.

Saturday, August 20^th is the Annual Small Town America Festival around the Courthouse Square in downtown Mt. Sterling. This is always a great day to come browse around the arts and crafts booths, meet friends and family, and have a bite to eat.

Noon to 4:00pm a Talent Showcase and concerts will take place on the lawn. Enjoy entertainment from up to 20 contestants competing for a professional recording session with Jeff Vice, Nashville writer and producer. There will also be a special performance by 2010 Talent Winner, Jason Goble and recording artists female duo Aly’an. If you are interested in competing in the Ale-8-One Small Town America Talent Showcase please pick up a registration form at 126 W. Main Street, Mt. Just a look ahead, we have two very special events that will be taking place the evening of Friday, September 2^nd. Nationally renowned fiber artist Arturo Sandoval will be on exhibit during the months of September and October.

September 2^nd, we will host the Opening Reception in the Arts Center Gallery from 4:30-7:00pm. A Gallery Talk will take place at 5:30pm. This will be a very special exhibit that you do not want to miss.

Also on Friday, Sept. 2^nd, we have a wonderful concert to be presented by Kevin McLaughlin at 7:00pm in the Lewis Apperson White Performance Hall in the Arts Center. Kevin currently attends the prestigious Manhattan School of Music with a focus on Opera.

We are very proud of Kevin and all his accomplishments and we look forward to hearing him perform in the Arts Center. Tickets will be $10 and benefits our arts projects and programs for 2011-12.

Drop-In Mothers Day Gift Workshop!

Cost: $2.00 plus $5.00 per piece made.
Create unique and ready-to-wear art glass necklaces and earrings just in time for
Mother’s Day! Mixed media artist Jennifer A. Reis will lead a glass tile jewelry
and magnet workshop on Saturday, April 30 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. This “open
house” style workshop hosts participants at any point during the scheduled times
to create art glass tile necklaces, earring sets or magnets with glass pieces,
collage paper materials and acrylic resin.
All supplies are provided, and the cost of the work is $5.00 per necklace, earring
set, or magnet created. Participants are invited to create as many pieces as they
like given the time provided.
Jennifer A. Reis teaches mixed media textile art techniques including
assemblage and surface design nationally, and has exhibited her award-winning
artwork at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, Craft Alliance, Southern Ohio
Museum, and The National Quilt Museum. She is a featured artist Creative
Quilting with Beads, a Lark Crafts publication. More information about Ms. Reis’s

Thank you to all who attended our first St. Patrick’s Day Party at the Arts Center! Great crowd, wonderful stews, delightful music were the fare for the evening. Plans are to do this event again next year so keep us in mind for next St. Patrick’s Day.

The fun continues this Friday evening, 4:30-7:00pm, in the Arts Center with our Opening Reception for paintings by Joyce Garner of Louisville and sponsored by Traditional Bank. You may recognize Joyce’s work locally for she designed the new candy boxes for Ruth Hunt Candy.

In reality Joyce’s work is very large, very bright, and an absolute delight to see. We are fortunate in that Ruth Hunt Candy is donating one of her large paintings to be hung in the upcoming small performance café in the basement of the Arts Center. It is going to look great in this space.

Now, here is just a quick plug for our upcoming café. We are in the process of fund raising to complete the basement area that will consist of a small café/coffee shop where small performances such as unplugged music, one person acts, Poetry Slams, Open Mics, and much more will take place.

Not only will this space be utilized for a café, but it will serve as a Green Room during our performances in the Lewis Apperson White Performance Hall. In this room actors will wait for cues from the stage manager, watch the performances on a large monitor, and have access to well designed dressing rooms.

Also there will be a “messy art classroom” where projects of all types can take place. Such as: Mosaics, ceramics, painting of backdrops, etc. A great room that can be hosed down after the artwork is finished.

Finally, we need a commercial kitchen to finish off the small performance café. As many know, doing this type of kitchen is very expensive. However, it will be well utilized and finishes out the basement area.

Now, saying the “small performance Café” is a mouth full. We would be very willing to change that name if a generous donor were to step forth to help. I just wanted to plant a little seed in case someone realizes the potential for this space and would like to give us some financial support. So, the weekend begins with this wonderful exhibit of paintings by Joyce Garner that is free. But, the arts experiences continue into Sunday afternoon when we are so excited about presenting author Frank X Walker.

Mr. Walker will be in the Lewis Apperson White Performance Hall at 4:00pm sharing his poetry, including his recent book entitled “Isaac Murphy: I Dedicate This Ride”. This book is about the life of Isaac Murphy who was the first African American Jockey skillfully told by Mr. Walker through the different voices of individuals who influenced his life.

Frank X Walker is nationally renowned as a writer and we are so fortunate to have him in our community. Please join us this Sunday at 4:00pm for this free event. Mr. Walker will also be signing books and answering questions about his works. A reception will follow.

On Thursday, April 14^th, the Kentucky Humanities Council, Montgomery County Education Foundation and Montgomery County Community Education will be presenting the final performance for this series of Chautauqua performers. George Rogers Clark is the featured character and will be portrayed by Mel Hankla.

A Revolutionary War Hero, 1752-1818, George Rogers Clark was a tall, talented Virginian who came to Kentucky as a surveyor. But it was as a military leader during the Revolutionary War that he made his mark. The settlers, Clark had brought along, moved from Corn Island to the Kentucky shore, founding the city of Louisville in late 1778.

The Performance begins at 7:00 and is free. The Chautauqua performances are great for any age so we encourage families to come and enjoy this piece of history and the opportunity to ask questions of Mr. Hankla. A reception will follow the performance for everyone.

Next event is a Salon on Friday - April 15^th. This will be a fun filled evening of Jazz music by 4 young men from Morehead State University under the direction of Dr. Roosevelt Escalante. Their sound has been compared to that of the “Four Freshmen” and “Manhattan Transfer” and will be held in the home of Mr. & Mrs. F.C. Bryan.

The Salon performances are always a hit and tickets sell out quickly. Be sure to purchase your ticket for $20 as soon as possible from the Gallery at the Arts Center and Ruth Hunt Candy. Saturday, April 16^th, the Montgomery Co. Early Childhood Development Council will present “A Festival Of Reading” in the Arts Center. This event will feature our very own local author, Karlin Roberts. Ms. Roberts is author of “October Moon on Lizard Ridge” and will be reading from her book to preschool and daycare age students.

There will also be a crafts project and snacks provided for the morning. This event is free, but children must be accompanied by an adult. So come join the fun April 16^th from 10:00am – noon at the Arts Center.

Finally, on April 30^th and May 1^st we will be holding our Annual Regional Student Art Show in the Arts Center. Students K-12 from Montgomery County and all surrounding counties in our region are invited to participate.

All work must be original by the student and ready to hang with wire and frames or mounted on board if it is 2 dimensional. This year we are adding a new category, Sculpture will be accepted into the show.

Categories for the show are as follows: Landscape, Still Life, Portraiture (includes animals), Abstract, Computer, Photography, and Sculpture. Each student may submit up to 4 entries with a fee of $1 per entry.

You do not have to be in an art class in order to participate. The schedule is as follows: Saturday – April 30^th: 8:00-10:00am – Registration and drop off of artwork; Sunday – May 1^st: 1:00-2:00pm – Open to the public, 2:00pm – Awards Ceremony. Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded.

So if you know of a student who loves to do visual art please have them take part in this event. It is a great way to meet other students who also love to do art. What's Happening at the Arts Center in March!

Beautiful Quilts will be on display in the Gallery this month in celebration of National Quilt Month. A “call for entries” was made by our Visual Arts committee looking for quilts of all types to be displayed this month.

We have contemporary and traditional quilts that represent in some way one of the 4 seasons of the year. Nationally renowned fiber artist Arturo Sandoval has selected the Best of Show and three honorable mentions that will be announced during the Gallery Talk and Opening Reception.

Please join us this Friday, March 4^th from 4:30-7:00pm for a first glimpse of these beautiful quilts, good food, and good conversation. This reception is free and is generously made possible by Whitaker Pharmacy and the Kentucky Arts Council.

But wait, there is more to take place that evening. Sasha Colette and the Magnolias will be performing during the reception and a free concert starting at 7:00pm. Sasha and the Magnolias are known for their Americana/Blues/Indie sound and this promises to be a concert you do not want to miss.

Saturday, March 5^th, we are excited about a Mini Quilt Workshop presented by Jennifer Reis of Morehead State University. Ms. Reis is a renowned fabric artist that has widely exhibited her work around the area and state.

The Mini Quilt Workshop will be presented from 1:00-5:00pm for adults. A fee of $45 includes materials and instruction and all you need to learn this intricate art form. It is not too late to register so call the Gallery at 498-6264 as soon as possible.

Monday, March 7^th, our 2 Blocks Off Broadway Theatre group is presenting a Reading Circle at the Arts Center. The last two have been great fun for everyone and they are inviting anyone who would like to read scripts (not memorize!) to join them. This is a free event and a great way to meet other folks interested in theatre in our community.

Tuesday, March 8^th, the Noteables Community Youth Chorus will be presenting their last concert of the season. These youth have flourished under the direction of Debbie Stegner and we are very proud of all they have accomplished.

Congratulations to Megan Jones, Mackenzie Green, and Kyla Copher for auditioning and their selection into the Allstate Kentucky Children’s Chorus. This is a prestigious chorus and a honor to have been made a member of this chorus.

Also, we wish to say congratulations to Debbie Stegner for being named the upcoming Kentucky Music Educators President Elect. This too is a big honor to be elected to this position.

Be sure to join us on the 8^th at 7:00pm to hear this wonderful chorus and applaud all their hard work. Donations will be accepted in lieu of tickets at the door.

Now its time for our adults who love to sing to have their chance to come together as members of the Sterling Singers Community Chorus. This year we are fortunate to have Debbie Stegner as the Choral Director for this group too.

This group does not hold auditions, but is open to anyone who enjoys singing and meeting other people who also enjoy music. First rehearsal is March 15^th at 7:00pm in the Arts Center. Thursday, March 10th, at 7:00pm, the Montgomery County Education Foundation and the Gateway Regional Arts Center will be presenting their third in a series of Chautauqua performances. This month’s performance will feature L. Henry Dowell portraying Doctor Ephraim McDowell who performed the first ovarectomy surgery in Danville, KY, removing a 22-pound tumor from the abdomen of a 46-year old woman. It brought McDowell worldwide acclaim as the father of abdominal surgery.

This performance is free generously sponsored by the Montgomery County Medical Society. Please join us for this great opportunity to learn about Dr. McDowell and the impact his surgery has made on medicine today.

St. Patrick’s Day is March 17^th and the Arts Center is celebrating with a party from 5:30-8:00pm! Join us for an Irish Stew Cook Off, Celtic Music, Bag Pipe music, beverages and fun. Tickets are $20 and available at Ruth Hunt Candy, the Gallery and at the door.

If you would like to enter your favorite Irish Stew in the cook off please call 859-498-6264. Prize money will be awarded! Make sure your friends come and stack the votes with their dollars and join in the Irish fun. Hope to see everyone there for this is a great way to support the Arts and have a pot full of fun too!

To finish out our Irish theme for March we will be privileged to hear in concert again this year the Morehead state University Concert Choir. This wonderful chorus, under the direction of Dr. Greg Detwieler, will treat us with a performance that includes an Irish Mass.

This performance will take place at 7:00pm on March 29^th, in the Lewis Apperson White Performance Hall in the Arts Center. Tickets are available at the door for $10 adults, $5 students, and $15 for families of 3 or more. This is a great opportunity to hear an outstanding choir and beautiful music so mark your calendars and join us March 29^th.

Just a heads up, the Regional Student Art Show is scheduled to take place April 30^th and May 1^st. This art show is open to students in grades K-12 from all over the Gateway Area and cash prizes will be awarded. The Sterling Singers have just started their rehearsals and are having a great time singing favorite Broadway Tunes!

Debbie Stegner is directing and Terry Ensor accompanying this fun loving chorus that meets at 7:00pm on Tuesday evenings.

We are pleased to announce that Internationally renown Quilt and Fiber Artist Arturo Alonzo Sandoval, is this year's Juror. There will be a Best of Show Award and two Honorable Mentions..
