Opening Reception for Gate City
Fine Arts Guild
Members
of the Gate City Fine Arts Guild are the featured artists for the month of June
in the Arts Center Gallery. This
group of local and regional artists will delight us with a showing of paintings
done in a variety of mediums and subjects.
The
Opening Reception is 4:30-7:00pm and will include a short Gallery Talk at
5:30pm by some of the artists.
This event is made possible by Whitaker Bank and is free and open to
everyone.
Auditions for
“You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown”
Auditions
for our next community play will take place on June 4 and 5 at 6:30pm in the
Arts Center. This is a wonderful
play will be under the direction of Drake Gillaspie and sponsored by Two Blocks
Off Broadway. Anyone 16 years and
older are invited to try their hand as actors in the play. But, if you enjoy the behind the scenes
action we need you too. Come join
the fun and audition and meet others who love theatre.
Coffee House Sampler
Our
second in a series of six Coffee House Samplers on Friday nights will begin on
June 8. These are a great way to
spend a casual evening enjoying great music in our Small Performance Café. Admission is only $5 and performances
begin at 7:30pm.
If
you are a musician and would like to be considered for a performance please
call the Arts Center at 498-6264 for an audition. We will be presenting our third series starting in
September.
Saturdays at the Arts Center: June

If
you are tired of hearing “Mom, I’m Bored” after a couple of weeks of summer
vacation then we have something for you.
“Saturdays at the Center” is a new series of art classes geared to
children in K-5th from 2:30-3:30pm. Teaching will be Shalita Compton who is an experienced art
educator that will be providing lessons in visual arts that will bring out the
creativity in your child.
Classes
are limited in size and have a fee of $50 that includes all materials. If you are interested please call the
Art Gallery as soon as possible at 498-6264.

Beginner
and advanced photographers, 16 years and over, will love increasing their
picture taking skills at the Gateway Regional Arts Center. Topics to be
covered: basic use of digital camera,
composition, lighting, post processing, portraiture, landscape.
“Around the World Summer Art
Camp” – June 12 - July 12
June
12 – July 12 we will be offering “Around the World Summer Art Camp” for
children K-5th grades.
This camp will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Noon – 2:45
daily. Children will be studying
reading, math and art taught by local educators at the arts center. Lunch is also included.
This
camp is made possible by a grant from ArtsReach of the KY Center for the Arts, DuBois
Community Center, Mapleton/Mt. Sterling Family Resource Centers, the Montgomery
Co. Health Department, and the Arts Center. For more information and to register please call Danielle

Motown’s Movin’ In! – Featuring
the “Soul Shakers”
We
have had a lot of requests for another Motown event, so June 16th is
the date to mark your calendar.
Doors open at 7:30pm. The
“Soul Shakers” have a fantastic sound that will make the evening a whole lot of
fun.
Tickets
are $15 in advance (available from Ruth Hunt Candy, the Arts Center, and
committee members) and $20 at the door and are limited. Included are appetizers and set ups,
please bring your favorite beverage.
An exciting silent auction of different baskets will also be taking
place. So don’t delay, tickets are
on sale today.
Author Visit by Anne Marshall
Our
Literary Committee is providing a free author visit on Sunday, June 17 at
3:00pm in the Arts Center. Anne
Marshall will be visiting to speak about her work. If you love to read this is a great opportunity to speak
with an author in a casual small setting.
Open Mic Night!
The
third Thursday night of the month means it is time for “Open Mic Night!”. Open Mic is open to any performer that
would like to try their hand at performing for a supportive audience in a small
intimate setting at the Arts Center.
If
you would like to perform please come at 6:30pm to sign up in the lower level
of the center. If you would like
to come as an audience the performances are free and begin at 7:00pm. This event is presented by our START 2
Young Adult Team and is a great way to spend a summer evening at the center.
Annual Meeting/Event – July 17
Plans
are in the works for an after work fun event at the Arts Center in celebration
of our year of successful programs.

community.

Summer Stock Theatre Camps - $45
Summer
Playhouse and Summer Stock Theatre Camp sign ups are underway at the Arts
Center. Call today to sign your
child up for Summer Playhouse for ages 7-9 years (9:00-noon daily) and Summer
Stock for youth ages 10-12 (1:00-4:00 daily).
Under
the direction of Jansje Huyck, these youth will be studying all aspects of
being on stage and rehearsing for two plays that will be performed on August 4th. Cost is $45 per student with some
need-based scholarships available.
Be
sure to stop by the Arts Center or go on line to fill out your application
today. These camps fill up quickly
and are limited to 21 students each.
Yoga every Monday and Friday
morning - 9:00-10:00am - $10/class
Don’t
forget that we offer Yoga at the Arts Center. This is great way to start your day, feel better, and be
more physically fit. Feel free to
drop in for a class and check it out and all you need is a Yoga matt to bring
with you.
Finally,
huge congratulations are in store to the Two Blocks Off Broadway community
theatre group for their highly successful performances of “Nunsense”! The actors were absolutely delightful
and made the performances fun for all.
Be sure to watch for future performances by this group and don’t forget
to take part in the auditions for “Charlie Brown” coming up this summer.

Pre school Classes!
Mount Sterling Sing, Dance, and Create! (Designed for children 18 months-2 years old and Mommy, Daddy, and/ or grandparents)
6 week course- 45 minute classes
Dates: 5/19, 5/26, 6/2, 6/9, 6/16,6/23 Class meets from 9:30-10:15 at the Gateway Regional Art Center
In this course, your child will explore their shadow, create a silhouette, sculpt a lion, and find out what it feels like to run their fingers through paint, sand, and clay. They will sing with new friends, wiggle, shake, dance, and jump all of their sillies out. Most of all, they will enjoy one on one time with Mommy, Daddy, or Grandma and Grandpa in a course that is structured to include:
meet and greet circle time
song and dance time
a minimum of two art activities
individual exploration/ sensory tables
clean up
goodbye song and dance with bubbles

There are three main goals of this course:
1. provide toddlers with an introduction to the arts, while meeting new friends and playmates
2. provide parents a place to meet peers in their community, while having a unique bonding experience with their child
3. provide instruction on art activities that are simple enough to be recreated at home for future art play
Cost $60.00 per child, which covers all supplies and instruction for six weeks.
Instructor:
Jennifer Ball is a certified art teacher with a masters degree in art education from the University of Kentucky. She has taught every level of art from elementary to college. She is excited to provide art education to toddlers and help develop an arts program for young children in the area.
