Opening Reception for Gate City Fine Arts Guild

            Members of the Gate City Fine Arts Guild are the featured artists for the month of June in the Arts Center Gallery.  This group of local and regional artists will delight us with a showing of paintings done in a variety of mediums and subjects.

            The Opening Reception is 4:30-7:00pm and will include a short Gallery Talk at 5:30pm by some of the artists.  This event is made possible by Whitaker Bank and is free and open to everyone.

Auditions for “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown”

            Auditions for our next community play will take place on June 4 and 5 at 6:30pm in the Arts Center.  This is a wonderful play will be under the direction of Drake Gillaspie and sponsored by Two Blocks Off Broadway.  Anyone 16 years and older are invited to try their hand as actors in the play.  But, if you enjoy the behind the scenes action we need you too.  Come join the fun and audition and meet others who love theatre.

Coffee House Sampler

            Our second in a series of six Coffee House Samplers on Friday nights will begin on June 8.  These are a great way to spend a casual evening enjoying great music in our Small Performance Café.  Admission is only $5 and performances begin at 7:30pm.

            If you are a musician and would like to be considered for a performance please call the Arts Center at 498-6264 for an audition.  We will be presenting our third series starting in September.

Saturdays at the Arts Center: June 9 - July 21 – K-5^th grades – 2:30-3:30

            If you are tired of hearing “Mom, I’m Bored” after a couple of weeks of summer vacation then we have something for you.  “Saturdays at the Center” is a new series of art classes geared to children in K-5^th from 2:30-3:30pm.  Teaching will be Shalita Compton who is an experienced art educator that will be providing lessons in visual arts that will bring out the creativity in your child.

            Classes are limited in size and have a fee of $50 that includes all materials.  If you are interested please call the Art Gallery as soon as possible at 498-6264.

            Beginner and advanced photographers, 16 years and over, will love increasing their picture taking skills at the Gateway Regional Arts Center. Topics to be covered:  basic use of digital camera, composition, lighting, post processing, portraiture, landscape.

“Around the World Summer Art Camp” – June 12 - July 12

            June 12 – July 12 we will be offering “Around the World Summer Art Camp” for children K-5^th grades.  This camp will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Noon – 2:45 daily.  Children will be studying reading, math and art taught by local educators at the arts center.  Lunch is also included.

            This camp is made possible by a grant from ArtsReach of the KY Center for the Arts, DuBois Community Center, Mapleton/Mt. Sterling Family Resource Centers, the Montgomery Co. Motown’s Movin’ In! – Featuring the “Soul Shakers”

            We have had a lot of requests for another Motown event, so June 16^th is the date to mark your calendar.  Doors open at 7:30pm.  The “Soul Shakers” have a fantastic sound that will make the evening a whole lot of fun.

            Tickets are $15 in advance (available from Ruth Hunt Candy, the Arts Center, and committee members) and $20 at the door and are limited.  Included are appetizers and set ups, please bring your favorite beverage.  An exciting silent auction of different baskets will also be taking place.  So don’t delay, tickets are on sale today.

Author Visit by Anne Marshall

            Our Literary Committee is providing a free author visit on Sunday, June 17 at 3:00pm in the Arts Center.  Anne Marshall will be visiting to speak about her work.  If you love to read this is a great opportunity to speak with an author in a casual small setting.

Open Mic Night! 

            The third Thursday night of the month means it is time for “Open Mic Night!”.  Open Mic is open to any performer that would like to try their hand at performing for a supportive audience in a small intimate setting at the Arts Center.

            If you would like to perform please come at 6:30pm to sign up in the lower level of the center.  If you would like to come as an audience the performances are free and begin at 7:00pm.  This event is presented by our START 2 Young Adult Team and is a great way to spend a summer evening at the center.

Annual Meeting/Event – July 17

            Plans are in the works for an after work fun event at the Arts Center in celebration of our year of successful programs.  Be watching for more information about this free event for our community.

July 30 – Aug. 4 - Playhouse and Summer Stock Theatre Camps - $45

            Summer Playhouse and Summer Stock Theatre Camp sign ups are underway at the Arts Center.  Call today to sign your child up for Summer Playhouse for ages 7-9 years (9:00-noon daily) and Summer Stock for youth ages 10-12 (1:00-4:00 daily).

            Under the direction of Jansje Huyck, these youth will be studying all aspects of being on stage and rehearsing for two plays that will be performed on August 4^th.  Cost is $45 per student with some need-based scholarships available. 

            Be sure to stop by the Arts Center or go on line to fill out your application today.  These camps fill up quickly and are limited to 21 students each.

Yoga every Monday and Friday morning - 9:00-10:00am - $10/class

            Don’t forget that we offer Yoga at the Arts Center.  This is great way to start your day, feel better, and be more physically fit.  Feel free to drop in for a class and check it out and all you need is a Yoga matt to bring with you.

            Finally, huge congratulations are in store to the Two Blocks Off Broadway community theatre group for their highly successful performances of “Nunsense”!  The actors were absolutely delightful and made the performances fun for all.  Be sure to watch for future performances by this group and don’t forget to take part in the auditions for “Charlie Brown” coming up this summer.

Pre school Classes!

Mount Sterling Sing, Dance, and Create! (Designed for children 18 months-2 years old and Mommy, Daddy, and/ or grandparents)

6 week course- 45 minute classes

Dates: 5/19, 5/26, 6/2, 6/9, 6/16,6/23 Class meets from 9:30-10:15 at the Gateway Regional Art Center

In this course, your child will explore their shadow, create a silhouette, sculpt a lion, and find out what it feels like to run their fingers through paint, sand, and clay. They will sing with new friends, wiggle, shake, dance, and jump all of their sillies out. Most of all, they will enjoy one on one time with Mommy, Daddy, or Grandma and Grandpa in a course that is structured to include:

meet and greet circle time
song and dance time
a minimum of two art activities
individual exploration/ sensory tables
clean up
goodbye song and dance with bubbles

There are three main goals of this course:

1. provide toddlers with an introduction to the arts, while meeting new friends and playmates

2. provide parents a place to meet peers in their community, while having a unique bonding experience with their child

3. provide instruction on art activities that are simple enough to be recreated at home for future art play

Cost $60.00 per child, which covers all supplies and instruction for six weeks.

Instructor:

Jennifer Ball is a certified art teacher with a masters degree in art education from the University of Kentucky. She has taught every level of art from elementary to college. She is excited to provide art education to toddlers and help develop an arts program for young children in the area.

Gate City Fine Arts Guild Paint Night

Plein Aire Painters of the Bluegrass

The Arts Center Gallery is hosting a delightful exhibit of paintings from the Plein Aire Painters of the Bluegrass. Plein Aire is a type of painting where the artists are actually outside with their easels painting landscapes, etc., using the natural light of the day. This is a traditional form of painting that has been around for centuries.

I peaked at the exhibit and it is going to be a beautiful one. Please join us Friday, April 6, from 4:30-7:00PM for this free reception and Gallery Talk at 5:30PM. We wish to say a special thank you to our friends in Traditional Bank for making this exhibit possible.

The Coffee House Sampler

Following the Opening Reception Friday night, we will be presenting the multi talented and popular musician Vearl Pennington in the 5^th of a series of Coffee Houses at 7:00PM. All of our Coffee Houses have featured musicians who auditioned in March to perform in our Small Performance Café. The evening is casual, great music, and fun for everyone and the cost is only $5.

On Friday, April 13^th, our featured artists will be Greg & Megan Wilson of “Peace of the Bluegrass”. This will be the last in our series of Coffee Houses until we begin our second set early this summer. For more information please call: 859-498-6264.

Bluegrass Area Has Talent! Competition

On April 20^th and 21^st we will be presenting the “Bluegrass Area Has Talent!” competition. This event is open to musicians, comedians, dancers, and any other creative performers of all ages. The winners will receive a trophy with the 1^st place winner also receiving a $200 cash prize.

However, to take part in this competition you must fill out an entry form that is due no later than April 12^th. Forms are available at the Arts Center and online: www.gatewayartscenter.com.

Make plans to attend the competition on Friday, April 20, and vote for your favorite performers. Finals will take place on Saturday, April 21. Admission: $5 in advance, $10 at the door for both nights.

MSU Choral Concert with Dr. Detweiler

Tuesday, April 17^th, the Morehead State University Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will be presenting a concert at 7:30PM in the Lewis Apperson White Performance Hall in the Gateway Regional Arts Center. These choirs are under the direction of Dr. Greg Detweiler and will perform a wide selection of classical music for all to enjoy.

Open Mic Night!

Our next Open Mic Night! will take place Thursday, April 19^th. This event is free to both performers and audience. If you would like to try your hand at performing a couple of songs, creative readings, etc. this is a great time to take a chance. Check in time for performers is 6:30PM, with the event beginning at 7:00PM. Come join the fun and be a part of a supportive audience that gives our performers a chance to show their talents. This event is free.

Arts In The Orchard

Gus Fogle & Jason Miller In Concert

On Friday, April 27^th, we are in for a special treat. Gus Fogle on piano and Jason Miller on bass guitar will be performing Mike Oldfield’s “Amarok” in the Lewis Apperson White Performance Hall. This piece has never been performed before and is a challenging piece of music that will require the artists to perform for one hour solid.

To hear this piece of history take place please join us at 7:00PM on the 27^th. Tickets will be available at the door: $5 for students of all ages with ID, and $10 for non-students.

Regional Student Art Show

To finish up our month of April we will be presenting the Annual Regional Student Art Show in the Gateway Regional Arts Center. Saturday, April 28^th, students are invited to submit their artwork between the hours of 8:00-10:00AM in the Arts Center. There is a fee of $1/piece and a limit of 4 pieces.

This year we are again including sculpture, photography, computer art, still life, portrait, landscape and abstract works. All students from surrounding counties in grades K-12 are invited to enter their original work.

2 dimensional works must be in a ready-to-hang format. Such as mounted on poster board, matted, or framed (must be wired to hang, absolutely no saw tooth hangers will be accepted). Students K-5^th are encouraged to matte or mount work rather than frame.

Sunday, April 29^th, the displays will be open to the public with awards given at 2:00PM. Awards include First Place ribbons, Champion Ribbons, and cash prizes for overall winners in each age group. This is a great opportunity for our young artists to show off their talents and to network with others in the region who enjoy the arts. For more information: 859-498-6264.

“Mad About Color!” Opening Reception – March 9

We are doing our Opening Reception a little differently this month. Instead of the first Friday, for this month only, we will be moving it to Friday, March 9^th. Featured this month is the “Mad About Color!” quilt and fiber art exhibition.

Arturo Sandoval, nationally renowned fiber artist, has chosen the Winner of this year’s exhibit and we will be making that announcement on the 9^th as well. The Opening Reception is from 4:30-7:00PM and is free. So please make plans to stop by on March 9 to see these beautiful pieces. We wish to say a special thank you to our sponsors this year: Whitaker Pharmacy, Laura & Brian Groff, Leah Hawkins – Attorney at Law, and Jeff & Jenny Rosania. We would not be able to offer this exhibit and award without the help of these individuals.

Coffee House Series – Friday evenings

But, we do have something brand new to offer on our First Friday of the month that is exciting. We are starting a Coffee House Series to take place in the Small Performance Café in the lower level of the Arts Center.

In February we held auditions for the first series of 6 performances. Our artists performing include: Greg & Megan Wilson, - Peace of the Bluegrass”, Corey Wright, - 2011 Small Town America Festival Talent Winner, Perry Williams, Duke Martin, and Don & Carmen Rogers. If this program is well attended we plan to offer three 6 week sessions through the year to present artists from the area. This event is only $5 and will be a great place to spend a Friday evening enjoying good music in a coffee house atmosphere. See you this Friday.

The Spirit of Frederick Douglas - 7:00

March 3^rd at 7:00PM the DuBois Education Committee will be presenting a wonderful program on the life of African American Frederick Douglass portrayed by Michael E. Crutcher, Sr. Frederick Douglass sought to embody three keys for success in life: 1. Believe in yourself; 2. Take advantage of every opportunity; 3. Use the power of spoken and written language to effect positive change for yourself and society.

Tickets are $10 and available at the Arts Center, Ruth Hunt Candy and at the door. Appetizers will be provided. Please come and support the DuBois Education Committee and learn about this very important figure in Black History.

Yoga – 9-10:15AM – Mondays & Fridays

Yoga is a wonderful way to do something good for your self. As Yoga Instructor Rene Hauck puts it: “Yoga is the perfect way to start your day! The emphasis of this yoga class is on promoting balance, flexibility, strength and relaxation in the body, mind and spirit. There is lots of energetic movement in the beginning of class followed by deep stretches and relaxation. This class is designed to be fun and accessible for all levels of experience. Walk out the door energized and centered!” Walk-ins are welcome but space is limited to 10 students and cost is $10/class. Classes take place every Monday and Friday morning.

Sterling Singers Begin Rehearsals – March 6

Spring is almost here so that means it is time for our Sterling Singers to gather and begin rehearsals for their Ice Cream Concert in June. This adult chorus will be directed by Debbie Kidd, accompanied by Ann Whisman, and is open to all who love to sing. Plus there are no auditions. Light Broadway style music and fun for everyone. To join please come on Tuesday, March 6 at 6:30PM. Cost is $20/month. Rehearsals are every Tuesday evening.

“Get Your Irish On at the O’Arts Center” - 5:00PM – March 10

March means that St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner. We are celebrating with a pre St. Patrick’s Day party to be held on Saturday, March 10 at the Arts Center. This is a fund raising event that will feature live Irish Music, a delicious Irish Stew Cook-off, Leprechaun Cuisine, and so much more! Bring your lucky gold or dollars to vote for your favorite Chef and support the Arts Center projects and programs through this fun filled event. Be sure to put this on your calendar today and purchase your $20 tickets from Ruth Hunt Candy or the Gateway Regional Arts Center.

Open Mic Night!

Open Mic Night! has been a wonderful success. Performers come together in the Small Performance Café at the Arts Center and share their talents with a very supportive and receptive audience. If you would like to register to perform the doors open at 6:30PM. Performances begin at 7:00PM. This is a family friendly event that is held the 3^rd Thursday of each month and is a great way to see what our emerging artists have to offer.

Our Program Coordinators and volunteers work very hard to bring a variety of arts programming to our center for our community. Many hours are spent preparing these events so they are of the best quality, equal to what is found in other cities.

But, they are not possible without the support of you too. We are sending out a second “Friends Drive”, a request to help make these programs possible. Please consider a generous donation today.
